For a start, the characters were really unconvincing. I mean, I suppose it is going to appeal to young girls who want danger and romance, but I found this book really tedious. I really don’t know why this book is so popular. Let’s try each strategy with a Cambridge B2 First part 7 exam. Skimming and scanning are necessary to get a good mark on the Cambridge, IETLS and TOEFL exams. Scanning improves your reading because it helps you learn how to find specific information. Once you find the part in the text you are looking for – read carefully.Look for what is being asked for in the question like a specific person or date. The reading strategy “scanning” is the same. You see a lot of fish, but your focus is on finding the fish with the red tail. Now, imagine that you are snorkeling again, but this time you are looking for one fish – the fish with the red tail. Next, if your skim reading has continued to find relevant information, you should go on to do some In- depth Reading.Scanning is reading a text for SPECIFIC INFORMATION. Try to resist the urge to read unnecessary details as it's important to continue on with your skim reading. These will give you a good indication of the points that the author discusses.ģ. Read the first (topic) sentence and last (concluding) sentence of a paragraph because these usually contain the main message of the paragraph.Ĥ. NOTE: The main purpose of scan reading is deciding whether or not something might be useful and worth reading in more detail. You can also use the ‘find’ search on your PC (Ctrl + F) but it is more limited. When using this technique, you should:ġ. Decide what keywords you need to look for before you start reading.Ģ. While reading, let your eyes (or finger) move quickly over the page and try to pick out the keywords rather than focusing on the meaning of individual sentences:ģ. When you see relevant words, stop and read more closely (but only if needed).
